7-year-old boy gets chance to drive historic steam train as he recovers from rare stroke

Things are certainly a lot different now with her two feet firmly planted on the ground.

The Mineral City mom couldn’t stop smiling Monday morning as she watched her son Stephen Comer take in the sights, sounds and smells as the 400-ton historic steam engine chugged its way into the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad yard in Valley View.

It was just a little over four months ago that Nicole Cavall gazed out of the window of a medical helicopter at the railroad tracks below snaking their way through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, wondering if she might lose her son.

Stephen was strapped to a gurney in the helicopter, and she was struggling to find the words to comfort her scared and very sick 7-year-old.

She knew Stephen loves trains, and she remarked that the scenic railroad that he loved to ride on was just below as the helicopter raced toward doctors waiting at the Cleveland Clinic.
