PENINSULA, Ohio – More than 214,000 passengers took a ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad in 2016 – the highest passenger count in the railroad’s 44-year history.

The record, a 15-percent increase compared to 2015, is attributed to the popularity of both its scenic excursions and special-event trains. Additionally, the railroad set attendance records for it national park scenic excursions and Bike Aboard! program with 117,478 and 23,911 passengers, respectively.

“The staff and volunteers of Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad are pleased that so many people chose our trains as a way to experience Cuyahoga Valley National Park,” said Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad spokeswoman Kim Gillan-Shafron, in a release.

One of the railroad’s most popular family events, the Polar Express, recorded more than 42,000 passengers in 2016. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad also added family-oriented events last year: Read Aboard, the train’s first summer reading program, and Royalty on the Rails and the Superhero Train.
