With the historic Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and the Cuyahoga River running alongside our tracks, planning an outdoor adventure with friends just got a lot easier. The Explorer Program (formerly Bike Abroad) is the perfect interactive entertainment choice near both Cleveland and Akron, pairing a vigorous hike, run, or paddle with the cultural history of vintage rail travel.

If you are wondering where to find top spots for interactive entertainment with friends in Northeast Ohio, the Explorer program (formerly Bike Aboard) delivers. By fusing the active, outdoor fun of navigating the trails with the cultural heritage of riding a vintage locomotive through Ohio's only national park, it offers a uniquely interactive group experience you won’t find anywhere else in the region.
How the Explorer Works
This is a one-way ride program.
Explorer is not a hop-on, hop-off ticket. It’s a single, one-way trip designed to help you explore the park at your own pace.Choose your own adventure.
Start anywhere in the park, explore the trail or river, then flag down the train at any CVSR boarding station to ride back in comfort.Board or deboard at any depot.
All eight of our depots are open for Explorer riders. Simply stand in view of the train crew to signal your ride.Pay on the train – no need to book in advance.
Just hop aboard and purchase your one-way fare directly from the train crew.
Explorer Fares
- $10 per hiker, runner, or biker
- $15 per kayaker
- $20 per tandem rider
- $60 Explorer Pass – unlimited one-way rides all season long
Please note: Bicycles and e-bikes under be under 40 lbs. E-bike batteries must be removed before transport.
If You Need to Ride Again
Each Explorer fare is good for one one-way trip per day. If you accidentally board again or need to continue your journey:
Our crew will kindly allow you to ride to the next major depot.
There, you can purchase a full National Park Scenic ticket to continue exploring.
