Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Expands Historic Fleet with Arrival of Two ALCO Locomotives from Grand Canyon Railway
Peninsula, Ohio – June 18, 2024 – The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) is excited to announce the arrival of two historic ALCO locomotives, recently acquired from the Grand Canyon Railway. This significant addition is part of CVSR's ongoing $3 million capital campaign aimed at expanding and preserving its collection of vintage locomotives. Members of the press and media are invited to join us at the Fitzwater Trainyard on Wednesday, June 19, at 12:20 PM for a special welcoming event as the locomotives roll into their new home.
The new additions to the CVSR fleet include one (1) FPA-4 and one (1) FPB-4 locomotive, which will join the railroad's current collection of three (3) FPA-4 locomotives. CVSR also hopes to purchase two (2) additional FPA-4 and one. (1) FPB-4 locomotive from the Grand Canyon Railway. These acquisitions will mark a significant milestone in CVSR's mission to become the largest collection of preserved ALCO locomotives in the country.
CVSR, with the recommendation of a railroad consultant, embarked on a strategic plan to enhance its operational capabilities and ensure the longevity of its historic fleet. The plan included purchasing additional ALCO locomotives to enable CVSR to operate two trains simultaneously, with a locomotive at each end. The additional locomotives will also allow for one locomotive to serve as a backup while another undergoes scheduled maintenance, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and reliability.
The acquisition of these locomotives is a testament to CVSR's commitment to preserving the rich history of American railroading and providing an authentic, nostalgic experience for its passengers. The Leading The Way Locomotive Fleet capital campaign has already raised $1.5 million towards its $3 million goal, reflecting strong support from the community and railroad enthusiasts.
“We are thrilled to welcome these two (2) ALCO locomotives to our fleet,” said Joe Mazur, President, and CEO of CVSR. “This expansion not only strengthens our operational capabilities but also underscores our dedication to preserving the legacy of these remarkable machines for future generations.”
The media event will include a brief ceremony featuring remarks from CVSR leadership, as well as photo opportunities with the newly arrived locomotives. Attendees will also have the chance to learn more about CVSR's and its vision for the future of historic railroading in the Cuyahoga Valley.
